ONE of South Australias oldest pieces of substantial furniture is in danger of leaving the state.
Scammells Auctions will auction a colonial bookcase dating back to the early 1840s which is believed to be one of the states first pieces of furniture.
As well as its age, the piece is unique for its river red gum composition – a dense local timber renowned for being difficult to work with.
The piece was commissioned by the Adelaide Council as an instalment in its chambers in the early days of the state.
Peter Scammell, a retired appraiser and valuer of antiques and decorative arts, said he fears the historic piece could be snapped up by an interstate buyer if action is not taken to keep it local.
