A VIETNAMESE restaurant that attracted protests over its controversial name has closed and the company that owned it has gone into voluntary administration.
In April, the owners of Fortitude Valley restaurant Uncle Ho, changed the name, which referred to communist North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, after a protest by about 100 Vietnamese people.
The owners also claimed they received “death threats’’ and threats to burn down the restaurant, because of the name, which was seen as offensive.
After its controversial beginnings in March, Uncle Ho was briefly closed and then reopened as Uncle Bia Hoi. The name later changed again to Aunty Oh’s Bia Hoi.
Late on Friday, Bespoke Hospitality Group, which owned the restaurant, went into voluntary administration, appointing Brendan Nixon of Stanley Morgan Solvency Accountants. Administrator Mr Nixon said the restaurant had already ceased trading prior to his appointment.
