AUSTIN, Texas Nearly one in three Americans are burdened by medical debt, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation. That means an estimated 100 million people nationwide carry a combined debt of about $2 Billion.
Its a pervasive problem that affects peoples financial health, as well as their mental and emotional health. However, the small donations an Austin teenager is collecting will eventually relieve millions of dollars of medical debt for people in Travis County.
The amount of people that struggle with it really kind of shocked me, said Austin teen Eli Yorio. Hes on a mission hes calling 26 for 26. His goal is to help relieve $2.6M in medical debt by the time he graduates high school in 2026.
