The sun has set on another Australian craft brewery, with Subiaco’s Golden West Brewing Co. having poured its last beer.
The brewer originally founded by five school mates as Modular Brewing in a former garage in Leederville opened the 400-capacity western suburbs brewpub on December 22, 2021.
On Wednesday, Golden West went into voluntary administration with a source close to the company citing the cost-of-living crisis and the spate of brewery closures in sydney and Adelaide as reasons behind the sudden closure.
“The writing was on the wall,” the source said, singling out the fact that one of Australia’s largest independent breweries in melbourne-based Hawkers Beer had appointed administrators as a clear sign of the hard times.
Mathieu Tribut, administrator and director of GTS Advisory, said Golden West completed a successful small business restructure last year to clear debts and continue trading.
After trading well through the final quarter of 2023, turnover dropped dramatically in January and February and Mr Tribut decided to suspend trading for the time being.
