EIGHTY-SEVEN people from the Mackay Region has filed for bankruptcy or started personal insolvency activity in the December quarter of 2016.
Of the 87, 52 filed for bankruptcy and 32 started a debt agreement and personal insolvency with debtors the new figures released by Australian Financial Security Authority.
The dismal statistics show people are struggling to make ends meet following falling property and rent prices and industry job losses.
The number for Mackay was actually the second worst in regional Queensland behind Townsville, with 99 personal insolvencies and 20 business insolvencies.
However, the number of people going bankrupt in Mackay has however gone down from the September quarters’ figure of 96 and June’s 90.
