Health insurer Aetna Inc. reported a 57% slide in net income even as revenue rose in the latest quarter, hurt by restructuring costs.
The earnings report from Aetna, which also included a soft view on earnings in 2017, comes a week after a federal judge blocked the proposed merger of Aetna and Humana Inc., citing antitrust concerns. On Tuesday, Aetna said it is “considering its options for responding to the trial court’s ruling,” and the company previously said it was giving serious consideration to an appeal. The companies had bet that a merger would give them scale to thrive as the industry consolidates, and it was also a bid to boost Aetna’s Medicare business.
