Federal investigators recently searched the Manhattan offices of an investment firm once headed by young insurance
magnate Alexander Chatfield Burns, whose empire collapsed in 2014 amid allegations that millions of dollars had been
siphoned off into unusual or nonexistent investments.
The Jan. 14 raid by federal agents, confirmed by people familiar with the events, appears to be the first indication
of an active criminal investigation into Mr. Burns’s insurance dealings.
