Etihad-controlled Italian flag carrier Alitalia is now a step closer to liquidation after its employees rejected a rescue plan negotiated by the government and unions that would have forced staff to take a salary cut in exchange for 2 billion in new cash needed to keep the company flying.
In essence, pilots have clearly rejected an agreement that had the support of the majority of the administrative staff.
Late on Monday, about 80%of staff had noted no in a referendum on the plan, with 87% participating (10,101 of the 11,602 eligible).
For the trade unions, the first cold shower came from Milan: between Linate and Malpensa airports the no votes were 976 (83.27%), and yes 192 (16.38% ).
