Opening an addiction clinic is a sad indictment of our efforts to shield the young from gambling
Britain is a country of gamblers. There is Ascot, there is the National Lottery, and there were Winston Churchills routinely unlucky streaks in Monte Carlo (on one visit he lost the equivalent of 90,000). Lucian Freud once painted a picture of a baby gorilla to settle a particularly enormous gambling debt. The first scene in the first James Bond movie was set in a casino. And now this nation of high rollers and punters and card sharps has entered a new chapter. It is opening a gambling addiction clinic. For children.
