Retail giant BHS is in liquidation with the Kilmarnock store set to close this summer.
A buyer was not found in the weeks since the company plunged into administration meaning around 11,000 jobs nationwide are now at risk.
Michael Keane, head of planning at East Ayrshire Council, revealed steps have already been taken to combat the closure of the BHS King Street store.
He added: The property is part of the portfolio of New River Retail owners of the Burns Mall – who have recently had architects visit the store in anticipation of this potential scenario.
NRR will be extremely pro-active in seeking new tenants and our Economic Development will liaise with them.
