A MP has backed calls for a scheme which would protect thousands of North East families from being ravaged by debt.
Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery said a Breathing Space initiative would help families struggling with debt to stabilise their finances.
It comes after Bank Of England data showed unsecured household debt is rising at its fastest rate since the financial crisis.
In the North East alone, an estimated 55,000 families with 90,000 children are living with problem debt.
The rise in personal borrowing has led to mounting concern that households which fall into debt need safer ways to manage financial difficulties.
