The number of people seeking help for debt in Cornwall is on the rise with more households struggling to pay basic bills such as water and council tax.
Cornwall Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) said that debt was the single biggest issue that people go to it for advice for, with 34 per cent of all enquiries relating to debt.
About 6,500 people in Cornwall went to their local CAB last year to ask for advice with money concerns. The top reasons for debt were council tax, credit cards and personal loans.
The main area of arrears was for water bills, with CAB clients having £699,984 worth of water bill debt in 2016/17. Second was rent arrears at £195,481, then mortgage payments at £165,871, electricity bills at £127,291 and gas bills totalling £…
