More than 200,000 credit-card borrowers turned to a charity for help last year because they were unable to repay their debts.
Stepchange says the number of families contacting it over out-of-control credit card balances has soared by 40 per cent since 2012.
Customers owe an average of £8,500 each – with total borrowings of £1.7billion.
