A gambling addict attacked his girlfriend with chocolate cake and choked her in a row over unpaid bills.
Paul Prescott subjected his then-partner of more than six years to violence in their home after his betting habit landed him in debt.
A court heard he became angry and threw cake at her face and into her hair, squeezed her throat, punched her in the head and ripped off her underwear, the Chronicle reports .
Now the 35-year-old, of Mitford Road, Morpeth, has been given a suspended prison sentence at Newcastle Crown Court for the assault.
Judge Edward Bindloss told him: Gambling put you into financial difficulties and that led to debt and embarrassment for you and affected the relationship.
