My mother recently received a bill from a medical collection agency for lab work performed at a hospital 200 miles from her home that she has never visited. In the end after several phone calls and a lengthy complaint letter the debt was identified as a free, at-home, mail-in screening she had been provided by her health insurance provider. The only problem was no results were ever received by her or her doctor, and rather than her insurer being charged for the screening, she received the bill from the hospital’s collection agency!
