Jenni Woods has had a tough life, but hoped a veterinary nursing course would set her up for a bright future.
The 58-year-old has severe epilepsy and when her symptoms subsided in May 2014 she enrolled in a course at Open Colleges.
“I love animals,” she said. “I just wanted to do something with my life.”
But her seizures worsened days before the course was due to start and following her doctor’s advice, she withdrew.
Although she never started the online course, and told the college about her medical issues, the full-fee paying student was slugged $5487.
