One barrister has received more than 98% of the 1.25m paid to lawyers by the states Legal Aid Board for personal insolvency cases since 2016.
Details released following a parliamentary question by Richard Boyd Barrett show that the barrister Keith Farry was paid 1.23m of the 1.25m in fees paid to lawyers representing debtors that asked the courts to approve personal insolvency arrangements rejected by creditors.
Farry was paid 21,400 in 2016, 157,000 in 2017, 418,000 in 2018, 496,000 in 2019, and 136,500 so far this year. Only five other barristers have been paid for work on section 115A appeals, as they are known, including Jim OCallaghan, a Fianna Fail TD, who received 3,260.
