AUGUSTA (WGME) Lawmakers are working on a bill to help Mainers dealing with crippling student loan debt.
One of the sponsors says he’s confident the bill will get the support it needs because student loan debt is an issue that affects thousands of Maine families.
Wednesday the Appropriations Committee approved $40 million to fund student loan debt cancellation and refinancing.
That money would provide eligible Mainers cancellation of up to half of their non-federal student debt and refinancing of high interest loans.
Refinancing would give Mainers a better rate and would require debt payments be no more than $100 a month.
