Theres good news for wannabe first-time Maryland home buyers who are struggling to make a down payment because of the high amount they owe on student loans: A new program will let them wrap their student loans into a mortgage.
The Maryland SmartBuy program, which started in late 2016, has helped home buyers retire $1 million in student debt, according to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Maryland SmartBuy had been restricted to buyers purchasing a foreclosed home that was owned and rehabilitated by the state. But starting this month, SmartBuy 2.0 will waive that requirement.
