Energy suppliers have again provoked the industry regulators ire by turning a blind eye to customers struggles with rising debt before stepping in to help.
Ofgem branded energy minnows First Utility, Ecotricity, Utility Warehouse, iSupplyEnergy and Spark Energy as the worst offenders.
The only big six supplier to be named and shamed is Npower.
Ofgem said that although the number of households in debt had fallen, companies are waiting while customers owe as much as £800 before moving to help reduce their burden by setting up repayment schemes.
The average debt for electricity accounts climbs to £628 before help is offered, 7pc higher than last year. Gas customers receiving help owe £622 on average, a 5pc increase.
