The Department of Education has announced for the first time that some students will have their debts cancelled after the Government was able to recover money from training providers rorting student loans.
The news came at the very end of today’s Senate committee into a massive shakeup of the vocational education and training (VET) sector.
“We’ve been able to get the remission of $13.2m in debt, so that is the student won’t have the debt and the Commonwealth will get that back. And that equates to 1500 debts,” Deputy Secretary Dr Subho Banerjee told the committee.
He did not provide any other context, including which providers the government had targeted, or which students would have their debt cancelled.
