Michigan nurses announced today they have worked with a nonprofit charity to pay down the medical debt for 500 families, raising $10,000 to clear away more than $1 million in debt in the first project of its kind in Michigan.
Nurses at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing led the effort and were supported by the Michigan Nurses Association, working with New York-based charity RIP Medical Debt. The Sparrow nurses union is affiliated with the MNA.
The Michigan nurses are also calling for hospital charity care and debt reforms to ease the burden of excessive medical bills, which is the No. 1 cause of personal bankruptcy….
