Prior to his stint at Amec, Mr Lewis was at US giant Halliburton for 20 years.
Ian Powell, chairman of Capita, said Mr Lewis had the ideal blend of experience to lead the transformation of the company, including developing major client relationships in both the private and public sectors.
Mr Lewis said he spied an opportunity at Capita to build a truly world class technology-enabled services business.
Matthew Hall, portfolio manager at Allianz Global Investors, said that what Mr Lewis lacked in direct experience of business process outsourcing would be made up for by his track record in restructuring businesses.
