The Sullivan County EMS is several hundred-thousand dollars in debt.
For years the department has been able to support itself, but with changes in healthcare and insurance policies, the department is struggling.
“We have had one of the highest call volume years that we’ve had in a long time,” Sullivan County Department of Health Director Gary Mayes said. “The demand for services is up, cost is slightly up and reimbursement is down.”
More often than not people are unable to pay those medical expenses after emergency responders meet their needs, putting the department in debt.
