Calia Australia has officially gone into liquidation, less than two weeks after staff at the top Japanese restaurant were told they wouldn’t have a job in the new year.
The business, which had stores in melbourne/index.html” id=”mol-3eed5c60-b01c-11ee-8567-bda03560913c”>Melbourne, entered liquidation on Tuesday.
Around 100 staff from Calia Australia received an email on December 28 informing them the chain’s stores in the CBD’s Emporium shopping centre and Chadstone were closing.
Staff were also advised the company’s email accounts ‘will no longer be monitored’, and they should direct all questions regarding wages and superannuation to liquidation firm Jirsch Sutherland.
The email said management had struggled to keep the chain afloat, but ‘Covid-related debt’ and rising costs drove it to closure.
