Renewed plans for an “open-range zoo” in Perth have been flagged by WA Premier Colin Barnett, who says it could become a reality in five years.
Mr Barnett first mentioned a proposal to put Perth Zoo’s larger animals in an open-range zoo in 2013.
He touched on it again at a tourism conference on Tuesday, later telling reporters he’d been looking at it carefully for the past 12 months and several possible sites were being considered.
Mr Barnett suggested it could be like Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria and would house “large, Savannah-type animals in a more natural environment”.
“If people on holidays are coming to, for them, a new destination like Perth, they want to be busy,” he said.
