The company behind a number of melbourne‘s top restaurants has gone into voluntary administration as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.
Calia Australia, described as an “unique Australian restaurant-to-retail brand”, called in administrators after recently facing “significant challenges”.
The business was created in 2016 and has restaurants in Emporium Melbourne and Chadstone featuring a modern Japanese menu designed by a Michelin star chef.
The retail offering includes speciality food, drinks and homewares.
Calia, co-owned by City of Melbourne councillor Jason Chang and Ricky Thien, appointed Jirsch Sutherland as administrators on June 28, ASIC documents show.
The restaurants remain operating but Mr Chang said in a statement the company had been hit hard by the impacts of the pandemic, the Herald Sun reported.
“Similar to many small hospitality businesses in Melbourne, the past few years have brought significant challenges to our company due to the impacts of COVID,” he said.
“Calia is working closely with Jirsch Sutherland to actively explore solutions as it relates to both customers and key stakeholders.
