Debt charity gets record cries for help – Morning Star Online

YOUNG adults renting their homes and working in insecure jobs are most likely to struggle with debt, a charity said yesterday as it reported receiving a record number of cries for help.

A total of 313,679 people with unmanageable money problems sought advice from StepChange Debt Charity between January and June, which is the highest six-month figure since 2011.

They owed an average of £13,826 each in credit card debt, overdraft spending, rent arrears and personal loans.

Most people affected have insecure work contracts and part-time jobs and are vulnerable to the lure of credit to meet high bills and unexpected expenses, the charity warned.
