A weekend in sydney has never been complete without wandering through the beautiful Carriageworks Farmers Market, basket in arm, and marvelling at the freshest fruit, vegetables, bread, honey and flowers.
But the popular Sydney institution, where chefs frequently go to buy their produce, has run into trouble, with the board of Carriageworks announcing the appointment of voluntary administrators KPMG.
Carriageworks is the largest contemporary multi-arts centre in Australia. The on-site events and programs generate 75 per cent of its income, but the cancellation or postponement of activities due to coronavirus restrictions has dealt a blow from which the company couldn’t recover.
Since opening in 2007, Carriageworks has become a Sydney icon, with one million visitors a year attending the Redfern site and up to 5000 people visiting the Farmers Market every Saturday.
The venue also regularly hosts world-class events such as the Sydney Writers’ Festival, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia and the design event Semi Permanent (associated with VIVID). These have all been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19.
