National Health Co-op goes into voluntary administration – The Canberra Times

The ACT Health Minister has called on the federal government to reconsider cutting off Canberra from bulk-billing incentives, as 30,000 members of a key affordable healthcare provider face an uncertain future. However, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Karen Price said bulk billing wasn’t the answer and broader reform of the system was needed. The National Health Co-op has entered voluntary administration saying the end of JobKeeper and “recent staff changes” had left an “insurmountable” forecast deficit. Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said it highlighted the difficulty to make a bulk-billing general practice “add up” in the ACT. National Health Co-op goes into voluntary administration – The Canberra Times

The National Health Co-op, which runs eight not-for-profit clinics in Canberra, has gone into voluntary administration. In a message to staff on Monday, administrators Slaven Torline said the end of JobKeeper and “recent staff changes” had left an “insurmountable” forecast deficit. “The board and management have looked at further ways to address the NHC’s financial health, including the introduction of mixed billing, consolidation of clinics, a possible merger or sale, significantly increasing membership fees and a government subsidy for bulk billing clinics,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, none of these have proven to be viable to turn around the forecast deficit in a timely manner, while staying true to the purpose of the NHC and…
